Sunday Brunch: Plumeria Beach House

My review of the restaurant, "Plumeria Beach House."  at the "Kahala Hotel & Resort".

An open-air restaurant

The outside of the "Plumeria Beach House"

My first impression of the "Plumeria Beach House" was a good one.  The atmosphere was more than inviting, the food smelled good, and the view was great.

Atmosphere: 4.0/5.0

The wait for a table was a little long, but time passed quickly enough.

So far, my experience was top-notch.

My waiter brought me to my table, and my menu was already awaiting me...

I looked over my choices: Sandwiches, Burgers, ...Curry?  Interesting, but I think I'll go with the sandwich.  I waited for the waiter to come back.

And waited.

Then waited some more.

I think I was half-sleep when the waiter finally came to take my order.  He took my order and menu, then left.  Never even asked me if I wanted a drink.  I figured he would when he came back with appetizers.

Service: 2.0/5.0 (Although the waiter was helpful, the wait was way too long.)

He came with appetizers (below) but still never mentioned anything about my drink.

Butter balls with lavash (appetizer)

The lavash with the butter was oh-so-delicious!  It crunched in my mouth and the butter melted on my tongue.  It made up for a lot.

After eating the lavash with butter, I decided to walk around the grounds and explore.  After all, I figured I would be waiting awhile for my meal.

The Grounds

A little pond filled with fish, turtles, and even a sting ray

 A little honu (sea turtle)

 Hotel grounds

Take a step (or two) out of your seat,
And you are literally right on the beach

The Food

I got back to my table and waited until my waiter returned once more with my sandwich.

When he set my plate down in front of me, the first thing I thought was, "Ew."  I felt like I was staring at a mountain of potato chips.

Presentation: 2.0/5.0

It looked like there was more chips than sandwich.

But you never know, maybe the taste is excellent.  I took a bite of sandwich.   Blech.  My mom makes better sandwiches than that.

Taste: 1.5/5.0

I ate one slice of my chicken sandwich until I couldn't eat anymore.  Then I started picking on the chips that were soggy from then sandwich sauce.  In the end I asked the waiter to put my leftovers into a container to take home.

However, I wasn't done yet.  I needed to eat something sweet and delicious.  Dessert.

After mulling over my options I finally decided on the "Kahala Sundae."

The brownies in it weren't that tasty, but I ate it all up anyway.

Taste: 3.5/5.0

The Kahala Sundae

It was time to go.  All in all, I wasn't satisfied with my experience, and if I had a choice, I wouldn't come back again.

Overall Rating: 2.5/5.0

  1. Julia,

Too bad you didn't enjoy it very much. :( The grounds looked very nice though; it reminded me of my stay at the Hilton Waikoloa Village!

    1. Oh and that is a cute family picture of Baxter, Berrington, and Butler! They all have names starting with B! Cute ;)

    2. Jasmine,

I had a nice time anyway. The scenery was really pretty!

The Hilton Waikoloa Village is really nice too.

    3. Thanks for the compliment about the picture! I just wanted to put something on the top of my blog...

Also, I didn't plan for their names to start with B. It just happened.

  2. Dear Julia,

Wow, what a fancy lunch. You don't get anything like that where I come from in my little Michigan town! The only hotel is a little log hut that 20 people have to share. They have excellent food, though. Too bad such a beautiful place is wasted by a unsatisfactory restaurant. :(

    1. Townie,

Your little town sounds very cute! There are other restaurants here so maybe the others are good tasting.

  3. Hi Julia,

You are such a talented blogger, posting two great posts in one day! It's a shame that such a nice place doesn't have great food to go along with the atmosphere. I find that sometimes it's the ugliest places that have the best food. ;) In Taiwan once I went to this place that was practically a two-story run down shack but the food was AMAZING!
Maybe you can be a restaurant critic when you get older, that review was very professional!!!

    1. Shandee,

Thank you so much! But actually, I posted "Busy Business" yesterday. Mmm! That restaurant sounds yummy. Maybe I can try it one day...

I don't want to be a restaurant critic, but it's fun to do on my free time!

      Thanks again,
      Julia

    2. Julia,

That would be really cool if you could go to Taiwan someday! :D It's a great place to visit, but a lot of people don't know much about it. It's very modern, even more modern than China. It also has beautiful scenery.

Cool, I don't want to be an artist but I love drawing, it's especially fun with my friend Julia! ;) We should do it more often if we have a chance.

  4. Hey Julia!

This restaurant looks really nice from the outside, but I guess the food wasn't that great. :'( Oh well, some people just come for the scenery I think.

Well Julia, All I can say is that I won't bother to try a meal at the Plumeria. That was a fair and balanced critique and places like that should be aware that their service is poor, not to mention their food! :)

  9. Hi Julia.

That's too bad that you didn't really enjoy the food. I think all the pictures you took are great though! Maybe the sandwichs weren't so good? Did all of your family order the same thing? At least you liked the appetizer! I think you did a good job on the report and critic. It will be a good example for all of us.

    1. Thanks for the comment Miyu!

My family ordered some sandwiches but also other things too. They didn't seem too pleased with the taste though. Also, they were complaining about the wait. I think we waited for over an hour for just my sandwich.

I agree, the view is fantastic! It's a bummer you didn't enjoy your meal though. I think the honu was really cute!

  11. Hi Julia,

The building and the scenery of that place looks nice. The name, Plumeria House is so cute too. Its so sad that you didn't enjoy the experience so much. But yes, those sandwiches do look disgusting with that mound of chips. I wonder if something different would've been more delicious?
