Happy Father's Day

It's Father's Day~ the special day to thank your dad for all that he's done.
What did you surprise your father with?  A new shirt?  Breakfast in bed?

Here's what I did:

I woke up really early this morning and looked for a quick and easy recipe to try out.  At first I wanted to make scones, but I didn't have all the ingredients.  Then, I thought about muffins, but I didn't want to take out the beater.  I finally decided on shortbread cookies.

Freshly baked shortbread cookies

Ingredients:
-1 cup of sugar
-1 cup of butter (two sticks or 1/2 pound)
-3 cups all purpose flour

Materials:
-large mixing bowl
-measuring cups
-mixing utensils (a spoon will work fine)
-wooden board or other cutting board
-rolling pin
-cookie sheet
-fork
-knife

Optional:
-cookie cutters

Directions:
Preheat oven to 275 degrees.  Cream the sugar and butter in a large mixing bowl.  Measure in 2 1/2 cups of flour.  Mix thoroughly.  Flour the wooden board or other cutting board with the leftover 1/2 cup of flour, and knead until you see cracks on the dough's surface.  Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thick, and cut into any shape you want.  Prick the cookies with a fork and put on the ungreased cookie sheet.  Bake for 45 minutes.

Optional:
Add nuts, chocolate, or some other add-on to your cookies.

After the cookies came out of the oven, I let them cool for a bit.  However, I noticed that I only had one "D" instead of two to spell dad!  Using quick thinking, I used a "B", but overlapped the cookie with an "A".  Then, I placed them on a cute plate and sprinkled some decorative beads on top.

Finshed cookies ready to be devoured!

When my dad sat down to enjoy his plate of cookies he noticed I spelled "BAD" instead of "DAD".  Whoops!

    1. Yes...too much shortbread! But they are all gone now. ;)

Also, I do like to bake sometimes, but it isn't really a hobby for me. I just bake when I feel like it.

That sounds like a wonderful gift- I'm sure your dad appreciated it.

Hi Julia, I'm sure your Dad really appreciated his Father's Day dessert made specially by you! Shortbread cookies are one of Uncle Jim's favorites, and he absolutely loves to spoon some lemon curd on them. Have you ever made it? It's really easy, and will keep for quite a while in the refrigerator. Because Uncle wanted several things that are more like pupus... I decided to make a whole dinner of pupus! The menu included: shiumai, Vietnamese garden rolls, minced chicken in lettuce wraps, meat chun and several kinds of namul......

    1. I can say that I have never eaten shortbread with lemon curd, but it sounds delicious. I should try it sometime.

Wow- a dinner of pupus! What a lucky husband and family you have. They are lucky to have you and your cooking talent!
